At Urbana School for Strings, we believe music is more than notes on a page — it’s a lifelong companion, a source of joy, and a bridge to deeper confidence and self-expression.

Exceptional private instruction in violin and viola for students of all ages

Our Core Values
From posture to muscle movement, we focus on precise fundamentals that set students up for long-term success.
Music gives students a universal voice, enriching both emotional well-being and cognitive skills.
Playing an instrument draws on math, physics, philosophy, and the arts — each enriching the other.
Pursuing difficult pieces cultivates patience and perseverance through the experience of delayed gratification.
There is always more to learn; we encourage students to embrace the journey rather than chase perfection

Prospective Students
We welcome students of all ages, from beginners to advanced players preparing for professional study.
Before beginning regular lessons, we offer a 30-minute trial session. This is a chance for student, parent, and instructor to meet, discuss goals, and ensure the right fit. For children under age 5, this meeting helps us determine whether it’s best to begin right away or wait until they’re ready.
If you already play, bring your instrument, accessories (shoulder rest, rosin, etc.), and any music you’ve been working on in the past six months. If you’re just starting out, we’ll guide you in selecting the right instrument and materials.
Lessons are offered in 30-, 45-, or 60-minute sessions. Advanced or pre-professional students may be eligible for longer formats, sometimes split across two weekly appointments.
